Hearty Whole-Wheat Ham & Cheese Bake
Yield: 4 large or 8 small servings
"A delicious cross between bread pudding and french toast"
Ingredients
- 4 Tbs soft margarine
- 1/2 lb slices cheddar cheese
- 8 thick slices baked ham
- 2 cups Half and Half
- 1/8 tsp pepper
- few drops hot pepper sauce
- 8 slices thick whole wheat bread
- 4 large eggs
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp prepared mustard
- 1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
Instructions
Grease 9 inch square pan. Butter bread slices on one side. Place 4 slices, buttered side down, in the bottom of the baking dish, squeezing if necessary. Top with cheese and 2 slices of ham per slice. Beat eggs with cream, salt, pepper, mustard, worcestershire and pepper sauce. Soak remaining buttered bread slices in egg mixture 2 minutes. Place buttered side up on cheese slices. Pour remaining egg mixture over sandwiches in baking dish. Cover and chill 1 hour or up to 8 hours. Heat oven to 350 degrees. Bake 45 to 60 minutes until golden brown and set. Yield: 4 large or 8 small servings.
